I can't believe this web site exists, or that I stumbled across it! A lot of nostalgia! I've forgotten a lot about the time spent in the Army, Germany, and Wildflecken, but I'll never forget the train ride to get there. Hairy armpits, legs and all. I learned to love the country and people, but never any love of the Army. Herr Springers bar, the Wurzburgerhof, the german girls, all are fond memories. Most of the entries here seem to be about different places like the "Goose" and it makes me wonder which places they were. Always a good time trying to find your way back on post - especially if you missed the last taxi for the night. Sgt. Pozzani and his family made a huge impression on me. I believe he was from Missouri. I think it was far better to be stationed there than a visitor. Some spent months in the field, I spent 1 night, out of 17 months, in the field. We were the elite on "the hill" in ADM and had it made. We did have to guard our nato site, what a joke that was. A lot of good and bad times, good and bad people, but I remember enjoying myself more than anything, and probably more than most. I would have ETS'd there if I'd applied soon enough. There were a lot of changes going on back then. I came back home after 2 years in the Army and it seemed the whole world had changed. So many good memories though, and I thank you for this site. I've found a couple names here that I will try to contact. Feel free to contact me. If ya didn't like me then, I'm sorry. If ya did, I'm grateful. It was all part of a great experience, and I have too many stories I could tell.

I found this site while looking up Wildflicken on Google Earth. Amazing how many guys served on "the Rock" over the years. I was drafted 1 May 68 and did AIT (jungle) at Ft Ord, Ca. Every company had been sent to Viet Nam for years but the one I was in and one other was sent to Germany because of the Russians invading Czechoslovakia. Started an 11 bravo but volunteered to be a cook. (Warmer inside and no guard duty or KP) They gave up on me ever learning to cook and put me in Rations with Larry Schulte (deceased) and Eppy (Gap) Perez. Remember those long winter nights, sometimes would go hang out with the night bakers, throwing dough at the cockroaches on the walls. (Ever have a really crunchy roll?) Became boss of rations after Larry went home. Got in a bit of trouble for getting rid of over stocked canned food, trading it for fresh produce with the garbage hauler. Mess Sargent wanted me sent to 'Nam but I only had 9 months left so I got to go to a Nike site near Athens, Greece. Really great duty, only 27 GI's there at any one time. Got out an E5 and drove my VW bus all over Europe. Haven't been back since though. Hung out with Ed Roberts and John & Katie Richardson. Ed & John worked at the ski area. Katie taught school. Someone on this site mentioned 3" of snow on July 3d. We had a picnic that day and it was one of the warmest days of the summer. Hope to get back to Europe someday, it's on my bucket list!

I lived in Wildflecken my freshman year in high school while my Dad, Clarence McCrea was stationed there. I had a great year and enjoyed living there. Would love to hear from any of my friends I shared the year with.

From Idar-Oberstein to Wildflecken... aah the convoys to move all the Battalion's stuff. Visited Wildflecken in 1996. Bundeswehr owned & controlled it. Only official visitors. Rightfully so. We did our jobs and returned it to its rightful owners. The beer, the wine, the runs, the training, the cold, the sadness, and moments of joy, new equipment training, backerei stops during FTXs, too brief listening moments and the many unit soldiers (some still protecting our country) willing. Youthful vanities, adult realities, and retired reflections. To all of us that served, know this. The 1-km zone is down and there are no more minefields, wire, towers, and guards keeping people in. The towns of Birx and Frankenheim are no longer Communist facades. Standing on the former E. Germany tower (a concrete reminder) looking west.... We won. It WAS all worth it.

I posted here previously re: my time in the Wild Place. While going thru some military papers I cam across something from my Wildflecken Welcome Packet which some of you may remember and all of you can certainly relate to. Across the wide Atlantic -Wildflecken is the spot - Where we're supposed to do our time - In the land that God forgot. Over here with the rain and fog - Where a guy is mightly blue - Right in the middle of nowhere 10,000 miles from you. We sweat, we freeze, we shiver - It's more then a man can stand - We're not exactly policeman - Just guarding this hill in Kraut land. We're the fighting men of the 15th - Drawing measly pay - Working for Wallstreet Playboys - For two and a half a day. Living with our memories - and longing for our gals - Hoping while we're rotting - They don't marry our 4F pals. Nobody knows we're living - And nobody gives a damn - We're just a bunch of drunkards - Who belong to Uncle Sam. But when we pass those pearly gates - You'll hear St. Peter yell "Fall out you guys from Wildflecken - You've spent your time in HELL." Author unknown.

Trained at Ft. Lewis for the jungle and assigned to a frozen pile of rocks in the clouds over Germany. Go figure. Had a blast driving a track up and down the mountains. Great scenery, great adventures and great friends. And now, great memories.

First,I would like to thank God for allowing me to serve with a fine group of solders in Charley company. I marry my wife for 30 years at Wildflecken and we returned to the "ROCK" for our 30th wedding anniversary (06/11). We had a lot of emotions and great memories as we rode through out the base. The Germany Army has control of everything and it doesn't look the same but all the building are in tact, with a few changes. I've travel the world but there can only be one Wildflecken, FRG, thanks everyone for the memories. God bless

My first unit assignment after training. Remember all the good times and friends we made. Great schnitzel at the Waffenkammer, great beer at the Monastery up at the Kruezburg. One time we were out on alert in our super secret GDP positions and a bunch of battalion wives found us while they were looking for some special plant called the Rhone Thistle - I was a butter bar, thanks to all who had patience & taught me the trade - SSG Sparrow, SGT Spruill, Major Phillips, Maj Cruz Ibarra. Shout outs to Cpt Steuwe, Cpt Kirikos, Cpt Duncan, Cpt Allen, Lt Mark Arnold and Cpt Blair Guthrie. Can't seem to remember anything about the snow, fog and mud :-)
